Fractal Art by Gary Reynolds
Fractal - A Fractal is a geometric pattern that is repeated at ever-smaller
scales to produce irregular shapes and/or surfaces that cannot be represented
by classical geometry. Self-similarity is the key behind all fractals.
Looking at a fractal at one scale gives the same design, at least in complexity
and form, as at any other scale. Zooming in over and over again you will
view pattern within pattern, detailed similarity in finer and finer scales.
Fractal Geometry - Discovered in the pursuit of the chaos theory
in the late twentieth century, fractal geometry is currently used to model
much of what we witness in nature; trees, flowers, seashells, mountains,
coastlines, clouds, lightning. Fractals are used to model soil erosion
and to analyze seismic patterns as well.
Fractal Art - As a fractal artist, my work consists of using fractal
geometry formulas to digitally create basic interesting shapes. Once I
have a shape that I think I can work with, I then apply coloring, textures,
light and shadow. Here is an example using the print Old South. Starting
with the initial shape, I applied 53 layers of coloring and textures to
arrive at the final image.

Fractals permeate our lives, appearing in places as tiny as the membrane
of a cell and as majestic as the solar system. One author elegantly describes
fractals as "the patterns of chaos."
Enter the world of Fractal Art, a realm where math, science and art intersect.
